Challenge
In adulthood, people often struggle to establish and maintain friendships. Adult loneliness has been rising to epidemic levels, having adverse effects on health and happiness, and young adults in new environments find themselves particularly vulnerable.
Solution
Book Club, an indie bookstore and community space, is creating an integrated campaign to remind “new” New Yorkers how friendships can form and grow with a storytelling inspired poster campaign. They are also launching “Annotation Club” online and in person to help people find someone that reads them like a book.
Process Highlights
Key Insight
People who have recently moved to the NYC area post-grad find themselves feeling lost and lonely living in a city of over 8 million people.
Why can’t I make friends here when it seems like it would be so easy?

Experiential
Book Club introduces: Annotation Club
What’s better than reading something on your TBR? Reading a book that has been loved (or hated) by someone already and forming a connection with them!
It’s a new book club that encourages writing in the books. Participants will be able to pass around books and add onto annotations from previous readers.
Book Club will host Monthly Mixers for people to get together and meet some of the people whose annotations they’ve read!
Digital
Annotation Club is also online
You can create your own profile, request books, connect with new friends, and explore annotations digitally.
Annotate with more than words
You can get even more creative and annotate with music links, images, videos, and sound files.
Takeaway
I would love to make the Annotation Club site responsive and have a mobile version. I could also see the campaign continuing with different people and their own storylines.
